Ignition/starter problem...

Hey guys, I'm new to the site and new to old school cars and wiring. I just picked up a 1950 Chrysler Royal and I can't get the thing to start by using the ignition. I'm always having to start it by jumping the solenoid on the starter.

Last week I had the stock starter rebuilt and had a new solenoid put on by NASA rebuilders on Nellis. I put the new starter on, replaced the old plug wires with new ones, put new plugs in, a new cap and replaced some old wiring that was cracked and just shotty work. It looks like who ever had the car before me put some additional wires on it.

I'm asking for help and to see if there is anyone out there who is willing to show me a thing or two with these older cars and try to get this thing running. I'm willing to pay for work or trade work for food (I'm a Chef at the Bellagio).

I drove this car home three weeks ago and it's been sitting since. HELP!!!!!!

Thanks,

Adam

You need to look at the wiring between the starter and the ignition switch - which kind of switch is on that car, a key switch, a pushbutton on the dash, or a pedal on the firewall by the gas pedal? - and the ignition switch and the battery. By jumping the solenoid, you are effectively bypassing those parts of the start/run circuit. Try using a fused jumper to bypass the start switch, or the start terminals on the key switch. If jumping the switch starts the car, the switch is bad. If not, there is a problem with something in the wiring between the switch and the other parts of the circuit. Another thing that would be a worthwhile aquisition, if you seriously plan on keeping the car, would be to find a factory or dealer service manual, and/or a wiring diagram for the car; they can be found online - just google "1950 Chrysler Royal wiring diagram".

The car as of now has a keyed ignition cylinder. I didn't see any pushbutton in conjunction with the cylinder. I bought a reproduction shop manual for the car on eBay last week and it does have the wiring diagram in it. The problem is, is that the wiring is so old and run down that the colors on the fabric insulation are pretty much gone and I can't tell what color they are to coorespond with the manual.

When I turn the key to the "on" position the ammeter comes on and goes to 40, the fuel gauge comes on, I have headlights, dash lights and wipers but it won't crank the car over. I'm losing patience on this thing.

I need someone to look at it that knows electrical forwards and backwards because I'm lost when it comes to electrical.

man electrical issues can be a major pain, chasing down faded wires only adds to the and stuff. Does the starter have the S and I studs on it? there could be a break in that (or more) wires from the ignition to the starter.

Is the ignition new? or was it out of another car, sometimes they could wear out a tad and the "start" contacts could just not be making contact.

Could be a plethora of other things too. I just bought a new wire kit and re wired mine about a year ago coz i just got tired of diggin around old cracked wires....

best of luck there.

The ignition is a new, universal one from Checker. The starter was rebuilt last week but for whatever reason when I try to bypass the ignition and jump the starter with a screwdriver it doesn't do anything besides some light sparks. I'm thinking I need to give it a tap with a hammer and see if it frees up. If not, I'm taking it to a shop and have them fix it, I'm losing patience very fast.

ya you may have to run that one by a hotrod shop. chasin down wiring issues could just run into more frustration.
The shop i use when i take my cars in is autobahn excellence, they are here in henderson on gibson/american pacific. 565-9059

they are mobile too, but you'd have to call them and run the issue by them to see if they would be able to come out and trouble shoot.

Yeah I got ahold of my buddy that owns Israel's Transmissions on Nellis, apparently the shop behind him has a guy that owns/works there that is a evil genius when it comes to electrical problems. Gonna tow the car down there tomorrow and hopefully get it taken care of.

Honestly all I want to do is just go cruise it down to the gas station and fill it up. :drive:
